Alternative Fashion Week is unlike any other fashion week. Running for a full week with 15 shows a day, attracting audiences of over 10,000 and with a vibrant fashion market of wild and wonderful accessories, this event is a prime example of how imagination and resourcefulness can overcome a mountain of economic obstacles and promote sustainability.

In 1993 Spitalfields was a deserted, run down area with a huge empty market building. Today it is probably the most exciting cultural quarter in London with its markets, art galleries, shops, restaurants and bars attracting millions of visitors every year. Alternative Fashion Week has played its part in regenerating the area, raising its profile to a global audience and promoting hundreds of new designers.

Alternative Fashion Week has established an international reputation with world-wide press coverage. Every year Alternative Arts is overwhelmed by the number of young designers hoping to establish their label applying from all over the country, and other parts of the world, to have a catwalk show. We invest in innovation and ideas. This is fashion on the edge, risky, experimental, fashion for the future. It’s not about money or material success but inspiration and ideology, how to have designer fashion in the current financial climate, thrifty & thrilling, offering a world of real opportunities. Alternative Fashion Week provides that vital stepping stone between the graduate shows and the mainstream fashion industry.

Alternative Arts produces Alternative Fashion Week. We are a publicly funded arts organisation presenting fashion as an exciting and original art form. Every year we have to raise the funds to present the week. We are always looking for sponsors as well as being supported by the Spitalfields Estate and Hammerson. We also support charities who take up a collection at each show.

Where are you showing your collection this season?

What can we expect from the next collection?

Our SS/13 collection is an extension of the rock and roll aesthetic from the NEW KILLER STAR collection inspired by David Bowie. Combining structured silhouettes with soft, feminine fabrics to create a grungy but elegant look. Its the juxtaposition of hard and soft.. I’m not saying anymore you, shall have to wait and see!!

Tell me about someone you really admire..

Vivienne Westwood. A true fashion rebel. Growing her business from a stall on Portobello Market to a global business empire whilst still maintaining her design beliefs and values. She created her business through the triumph of personal style over fashion, something i truly believe in. Fashion should be unique and personal to the individual rather than trend led. Personal style should be encouraged. In a society where everyone seems to want to fit in, we should dare to stand out.

What made you want to set up your own business?

I truly believe that the fashion industry needs more room for graduates and creatives to showcase their talent. I hope that by creating a successful label I can encourage and help others to do the same. I love the idea of helping young people to develop their ideas and work towards their dreams.

My label is still in its infancy, and i still have a lot to learn for the business to grow, but it is gathering a small loyal following and my work has been published in many fashion magazines and online editorials. I have worked on many exciting collaborations..and will hopefully work on many more exciting ones in the future! I’m always open to creative suggestion and ways to push the brand forward.

What does entrepeneurship mean to you?

Taking risk, both personal and financial, in order to make your dreams a reality.

To learn and be inspired everyday and channel this into a viable business venture following your passion, which once successful, can be used to teach and inspire others to do the same.

Where are you from?

I’m from York originally, but am now based in London

Did you always want to be a fashion designer?

I think I wanted to do every job at one point or another, when I was growing up.. I remember wanting to be a model, actress, interior designer.. I wanted to do EVERYTHING!.. Always creative though. I’m an artist at heart. Creating things and inspiring people is where my passion lies and what gets me out of bed in the morning.

What made you want to design menswear?

I guess I believe there is much more scope to push the boundaries of menswear. I prefer the aesthetic. I like to play with the silhouette and embrace innovative fabric choices. I’ve never been very girly.. Its all about rock and roll.

Jo, tell us a little bit about yourself..

I’m a young entrepreneur, from a fashion background in business, design and styling. I’m currently setting up my own menswear fashion label, Gunsmoke and Lavender which will be launching this year. Style is at the heart of my life and my business. I don’t follow fashion trends. I encourage everyone to be true to themselves. Everyone has a story.

Where do you get your design inspiration?

Inspiration can come from anywhere and I am inspired by something new every day. Each collection I design is personal to me. I have to connect on an emotional level with a subject for me to research into it thoroughly enough to develop a strong, structured collection.

How would you define your personal style?

Unique and edgy but inconsistent..
